Drones in Greece in 2026: What license do I need to fly legally?

The drone market is growing rapidly

Drones have evolved from a simple hobby into a valuable professional tool. They are now used in photography, filmmaking, surveying, solar panel inspections, precision agriculture, aerial spraying, civil engineering, shipping, private security, civil protection, and dozens of other applications.

At the same time, however, European legislation has become stricter. Flying a drone without the necessary knowledge or certifications can result in fines, but more importantly, it can endanger people and property.

Do I need a permit for my drone?

In most cases, the answer is: Yes.

Even if the drone was purchased for personal use, the operator must be aware of their obligations under European regulations.

The need for training depends on:

  • the weight of the drone,
  • its category (C0 through C6),
  • the flight area,
  • the distance from people,
  • and the type of mission.

The main categories of education

OPEN A1/A3

The A1/A3 certification is the first step for every new operator.

It is suitable for:

  • amateurs,
  • content creators,
  • photographers,
  • professionals who operate simple flights.

The training covers the basic theory and safety requirements for operating drones.

OPEN A2

The A2 certification allows flights closer to people, provided that an appropriate drone is used and the legal requirements are met.

It is the ideal choice for those who want to work professionally.

STS-01 & STS-02

STS certifications are intended for professionals who carry out more demanding missions.

For example:

  • inspections of technical projects,
  • solar farms,
  • civil engineering projects,
  • mapping,
  • precision agriculture,
  • security companies,
  • Aerial spraying.
  • film productions.

The theoretical training is accompanied by individual flight training and exams in accordance with EASA requirements.

Why does a good education make a difference?

Just owning a drone isn’t enough.

A properly trained operator knows:

  • where it is allowed to fly,
  • When is flying prohibited,
  • how to handle an emergency,
  • how to protect people and property,
  • how to work professionally and safely.

A quality education offers more than just a certificate. It offers self-confidence, professionalism, and credibility.
