In accordance with Regulation (EU) 2019/947 and in particular Article UAS.OPEN.070, the validity period of the pilot certificates of competency is defined as follows.
(remote pilot competency) in the Open Category, as well as the way of their revalidation.
The renewal process can be carried out by attending a Refresher Course,
which demonstrates that the operator still possesses the required knowledge and skills.
The purpose of the refresher course is to ensure that unmanned aircraft operators remain up to date on possible changes to the legislation,
the operational requirements and technological developments in the sector.
Main points of Article UAS.OPEN.070
- Period of validity of the certificate
The online theoretical competence certificate and the pilot certificate of competency are valid for a period of five (5) years. - Procedure for renewal before expiry
An operator shall ensure that his certificate is renewed before the expiry of the five-year period. The options available are:
- Attendance and completion of a Refresher Course covering the theoretical courses provided for in the Regulation
& at the end the operator writes a Knowledge Quiz ( not an exam ) .
- The programme is provided by a recognised/accredited body.
- Case of certificate expiry
Once the validity date of the certificate has passed, simply attending a Refresher Course is not sufficient. In this case, proof of competence is required again
(demonstration of competency), in accordance with the procedure applicable to the initial acquisition of the certificate.
Application to subcategories A1/A3 and A2
- A2: A2 certificate holders should ensure that they renew their certificate in good time, before the five-year validity period expires, in order to avoid the full review process.
- If the certificate expires, regardless of the subcategory (A1/A3 ), a re-examination or proof of competence as provided for in the original certification shall be required
– it is not enough just to follow a renewal programme.
